Embroidered portraits

Your cat, dog, rabbit, hamster — or the person you love — redrawn as art, then stitched in thread onto organic cotton in England.

About the width of your palm — 10 cm across.

A badge, not a print

Embroidery has a hard limit that printing does not: 10 × 10 cm is the largest area the machines will stitch. So a Lumina embroidered portrait is a left-chest badge about the size of your palm — head and shoulders, whether that is a cat, a dog, a rabbit, a hamster or a person, raised off the fabric with the thread catching the light.

We are telling you this first because every printed portrait you have seen online covers the whole chest, and it would be easy to expect the same here. It is a different object. Smaller, quieter, and considerably harder to make.

Up to 6

Each is a physical spool of a fixed colour. There is no blending, so the portrait is built from flat areas — which is why the styles below matter.

From photograph to thread

  1. One

    Your photo becomes art

Upload a phone snapshot. The studio renders a portrait in under a minute, free, and you can restyle it as often as you like.

  2. Two

    You approve it

Nothing is sent anywhere until the artwork is one you want. This is the last cheap moment to change your mind, and we would rather you used it.

  3. Three

    It is digitised

The portrait is converted into a stitch file — a map of every needle movement. Because every Lumina portrait is unique, this is done fresh for each order, which is why the first one takes a little longer.

  4. Four

    It is stitched and posted

The garment goes through the embroidery machine in England and ships directly to you.

Thread has opinions

Not every style can be stitched

A needle cannot fade, blend or glow. Styles built from flat shapes and clean lines become better objects in thread than they are on paper; styles built from washes and soft light stop being themselves. So we only offer the ones that work, and we would rather name the others than let you find out after paying.

Stitches beautifully

Printed only

These are all available as prints, canvases and framed pieces, where nothing is lost.

Close enough to count the stitches

This is what 6 thread colours look like at 10 cm: the shape of the head, the set of the ears, the markings that only they have. Not the texture of fur or hair — thread cannot do texture — but the likeness of one specific face, which is the part that makes someone recognise them across a room.
